Agricultural researchers across the world have always been working to maximise production yield while battling harmful factors like plant diseases, pest infestation (mainly coffee borer beetles), ease of sowing and harvesting, and climate adaptation.

In 1970s, Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC) managed to developed two single varietals 74110 and 74112 to combat coffee berry disease in Ethiopia, and released them in 1979 once they were ready; these two varietals originated from a single "Mother Tree" in the Bishari village, Metu Province, Illubabor Zone.

Nevertheless, the general Ethiopian farmers have still largely cultivate "heirloom" coffees passed down from generations to generations, because it is easier and cheaper. It is not until recent specialty coffee movement that more and more producers started paying extra attention to details - in this case, the a controlled cultivation of delicious varietal.
